A Slinky Jazz Babe!

15th November 2009

In view of the continuing dissatisfaction of a certain small number of patrons of the Thinking Shop (note the comments on the link), I thought it best to increase the number of Slinky Jazz Babes AND Cats around there. So here you are. All of it together, with some gratuitous violence thrown in for those who like the Bible.

BET. E

Bet e

Bet. e is another Canadian (grew up in Trois-Rivières, Québec calling herself Elizabeth Provencher) Jazz vocalist I’ve been listening to a lot lately. Like a lot of jazz vocalists, as I’ve discovered, she is multilingual. There are songs in English, French and Portuguese.

VIST HER WEBSITE HERE

I have two of her three albums. Her first (which I don’t have) and second were as part of a duo called Bet e. and Stef (with guitarist Stephane Carreau).

No video, just sound. From the second album, so just click it to play and read on.

Bet e stefJazz. Bossa Nova from the 1990s At time of writing (Nov. 13, 09), this was at Amazon.ca for $7.99. I haven’t heard any of it but it was released on an independent label as was quite successful and led to performances at the Montreal Jazz Festival.

I picked up the second Bet.e & Stef album “Day by Day” for a paltry $5.00 at Blue Print Records, a great new independent and second hand music store here in Lethbridge. Best musical five-spot I think I’ve ever spent. They have a small Jazz section, but it is WAY better than any of the other CD retailers in town (which is not much, Future Shop and HMV…). I’ve picked up a lot of stuff at BPR.

day by dayDay by Day from 2002. This is a great album for kicking back and relaxing. Some nice laid back horns and strings complement some great guitar work and excellent vocals (Stef does a good bit of the singing, too). There seems to be a lot of overdubbing on etc. on the album but it doesn’t really get in the way of what is essentially a very natural sounding album. A number of the tunes are very simply produced. The duo broke up in 2003.

Her third album is from this year and is called b.coming and has a lot of musical influences on it. Again she has a great guitar player on board, Paul Audy.

You can sample the album on her website,

You can get the new album on iTunes here. All three are available at Amazon.ca as a package deal for just under $29.00, although they give some other name to b.coming so who knows what you are going to get…

Work 'n Stuff

15th November 2009

So now I work at a vet clinic as the clean-up girl (aka: Molly Maid). I do get to do some fun stuff though, like watch knee surgeries, hold squirly animals, and go on the occasional outing with one of the DVMs.

And so far I am still cycling every day to work. The only thing I’m really worried about is how nasty it will get when it does finally decide to snow.

I don’t know why, but my brother (who I am living with, along with his wife) decided to cheap out and downgrade our internet connection. Like seriously downgrade it.

Fortunatly we are back to normal speed after two short weeks of torture.
